Students Face Uncertainty as NIN Hurdles Threaten Participation in WAEC & JAMB Exams

As the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations approach, a growing number of students are expressing distress over their inability to obtain the National Identification Number (NIN), a mandatory requirement for sitting the exams. The predicament has left many fearing that they might be excluded from this year’s crucial academic assessments.

Investigations reveal that students, who have dedicated weeks to securing their NIN, find themselves in a frustrating situation at the National Identification Management Commission (NIMC) headquarters on Sapele Road, Benin City. Despite their efforts, numerous students are still without the essential identification number, posing a significant barrier to their participation in the upcoming examinations.

Sharon Ajayi, reporting on the ground, highlights the plea of these distressed students, who are urging the federal government to take immediate action to address the challenges they face. One of the proposed solutions put forth by the affected students is the reopening of NIN registration sub-centers across the state. This, they argue, would not only alleviate the pressure on the central office but also expedite the registration process, ensuring that all eligible students can obtain their NIN in a timely manner.

The demand for the reopening of sub-centers is grounded in the practicality it offers, making the process more accessible and efficient for the large number of students seeking to meet the NIN requirement. The students emphasize the urgency of this request, citing the time-sensitive nature of the impending WAEC and JAMB examinations.

The students’ predicament raises questions about the overall preparedness of relevant authorities to handle the surge in demand for NIN registration. With the importance of these identification numbers not limited to examinations but also extending to various aspects of daily life, the current challenges faced by students shed light on potential bottlenecks in the NIN registration system.

In response to these pleas, it remains to be seen how swiftly the federal government and NIMC can address the concerns raised by the students and ensure a smoother process for obtaining the NIN. As the clock ticks down to the examination dates, the fate of many students hangs in the balance, dependent on the swift resolution of the challenges surrounding NIN acquisition.
