NCPWD commends JAMB for inclusive PWD initiative

In a significant stride towards inclusivity, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has earned commendation from the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) for its groundbreaking initiative offering free forms to candidates with disabilities.

James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of NCPWD, expressed gratitude during his visit to the JAMB headquarters in Abuja. He commended Is-haq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, for championing a move that empowers candidates with disabilities to compete on an equal footing with their peers.

Lalu emphasized the importance of upholding the rights of the over 35 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria who aspire to pursue higher education for a brighter future. He outlined a crucial step in the process, highlighting that candidates must obtain a disability certificate as a prerequisite for acquiring the free forms.

The disability certificate, equipped with an electronic card featuring a unique QR code, ensures a streamlined verification process for JAMB. This not only facilitates accessibility but also sets a standard for authenticity in the application procedure.

While expressing appreciation for the positive impact of the free form initiative on youths with disabilities, Lalu noted a potential challenge. He mentioned that the initiative had inadvertently led to instances of individuals without disabilities attempting to exploit the scheme by feigning disability.
