JAMB Offers Support to Distressed Student Threatening Killing Self Over Failure to Register for 2024 UTME

In a heartfelt response to a distressed student, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended words of encouragement to a young Nigerian named David, who recently expressed thoughts of self-harm due to the inability to register for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

David, taking to his social media platform on Wednesday, February 28, shared his frustration after investing substantial time acquiring his National Identity Number (NIN) only to discover that the UTME registration period had concluded. Expressing his despair, he contemplated waiting for another year before attempting the examination.

In his tweet, David revealed, “Feeling suicidal, After struggling with NIN just to hear that the registration period has ended and I would have to wait 365 days again, I don’t think I can take the pain.”

In response to the alarming post, JAMB swiftly intervened, urging David to reconsider his extreme decision. The examination board empathetically reminded the student that missing the 2024 UTME registration does not mark the end of life’s opportunities.

In their supportive tweet, JAMB stated, “Take it easy. Missing the 2024 UTME registration isn’t the end of life. What happens if you write and fail or even pass but don’t meet other criteria for admission? Be positive-minded and stay focused.”

The registration window for the 2024 UTME officially closed on Monday, February 26, as previously announced by JAMB in 2023. Despite this setback, the board seeks to emphasize the importance of a positive mindset and encourages candidates to remain focused on their academic pursuits, emphasizing that success is not solely determined by a single examination.

As discussions around mental health gain prominence, JAMB’s timely intervention serves as a reminder of the significance of providing support and understanding to those facing academic challenges. The incident sheds light on the broader issue of the pressure students often experience during the examination period and the need for increased awareness and mental health resources within the education system.
