JAMB Announces Waiver of Registration Fee for Persons with Disabilities in 2024 UTME

JAMB Announces Waiver of Registration Fee for Persons with Disabilities in 2024 UTME

In a significant move towards inclusivity and equal access to higher education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has declared that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2024 will be free of charge for individuals with disabilities seeking to register.

During a media interactive session to kick off the registration process for the 2024 UTME, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of JAMB, revealed this groundbreaking initiative. He emphasized that JAMB is committed to providing support to all categories of persons living with disabilities by issuing application documents free of charge.

One noteworthy development announced by Prof Oloyede is the provision of audio books for blind candidates to create a level playing field. This decision stems from a recommendation made during the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.

The audio books will be available in popular formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices capable of streaming audio records. Prof Oloyede expressed confidence that this digital adaptation of traditional reading materials would significantly aid blind candidates in understanding the subject matter.

As part of this inclusive approach, blind candidates will also have diagrams removed from their examination questions, streamlining the testing process to suit their needs. Additionally, for the 2024 UTME, all categories of candidates will receive a free e-copy of the reading text to further facilitate their preparation.

Prof Oloyede emphasized the commitment of JAMB to ensuring that no candidate is disadvantaged due to a disability, and these measures underscore the board’s dedication to creating an environment that fosters equal opportunities for all.

The registration for the 2024 UTME is set to commence on January 15, with a registration fee of N6,200 for candidates opting out of the mock examination and N7,700 for those participating in the mock examination. This fee structure aims to accommodate the diverse needs of candidates while ensuring a fair and accessible examination process for everyone.
