BREAKING NEWS: JAMB to Extend 2024 UTME Registration by 2 Weeks

In response to the prevailing economic challenges facing many families in Nigeria, the House of Representatives has passed a resolution urging the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) to extend the registration period for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by two weeks. The decision, reached during a plenary session on Thursday, saw the House mandating the relevant Committee on Education and Legislative Compliance to ensure strict compliance with the extension.Bello Shinkafi, the lawmaker who moved the motion, emphasized that JAMB, as a statutory body, was established to oversee the registration and conduct of the UTME for the purpose of admitting candidates into tertiary institutions across the country.Shinkafi highlighted that the current economic situation has constrained many families, making it difficult for them to register their wards within the initial timeline. He pointed out that the 2024 UTME, which began on January 15th, had an original deadline of February 26th, 2024.Expressing concern, Shinkafi stated, “We are all aware of the painful economic situation prevailing in the country. As a result, many families have been constrained from registering their wards by this timeline.”The lawmaker stressed that without an extension, numerous candidates would be unable to register and participate in the UTME, leading to a lack of broad coverage and participation in this year’s examination.Shinkafi further noted, “Convinced that your quick response to the extension of time by two weeks will encourage the parents of these candidates to persistently register their children. Importantly, this will reassure the public of confidence in the current administration in Nigeria.”As a resolution, the House mandated JAMB to extend the registration period by two weeks, aiming to facilitate the registration of potential candidates for the 2024 UTME. This move is expected to provide relief to families facing economic constraints and ensure wider participation in the examination.
