ASUP spokesman slams JAMB for exploiting admission seekers

The National Publicity Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Abdullahi Yelwa, has criticized the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for turning into a revenue-generating institution rather than a service-oriented one. He accused JAMB of extorting Nigerians who are seeking admission into higher institutions in the country.

Yelwa made these remarks in a paper presentation at the first ‘Bauchi South Stakeholders Interactive Session’ organised by the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Buba Umar, on Saturday in Bauchi.

He expressed his displeasure at the way JAMB operates, saying that it is causing unnecessary hardship and limiting opportunities for prospective students. He said that JAMB should respect the choices of the candidates and offer them admission in any of the four institutions they selected, instead of forcing them to pay for changing their institutions.

He also suggested that JAMB should extend the validity of its results beyond one year, so that candidates who are not offered admission in the current session can use the same results to seek admission in the next academic session.

He urged the Senator to use his position to intervene and stop the situation, saying that JAMB should be a facilitator and not a hindrance to access to tertiary education in the country.

JAMB is a government agency that conducts the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for entry into all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria. It also places suitably qualified candidates in the tertiary institutions after considering various factors.

According to its website, JAMB generated over N2 billion from the sale of UTME forms in 2023. It also collected N3,500 from each candidate for the change of institution or course.
