ASUP Official Accuses JAMB of Exploiting and Frustrating Applicants

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has expressed its displeasure over the policies and practices of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), which it claims are extorting money from applicants and causing unnecessary hardship for them.

According to the ASUP President, Mr. Anderson Ezeibe, JAMB has been imposing unpopular and discriminatory policies on the preferences and choices of Nigerian youths, such as changing their choices of school without their consent, favouring private universities that charge exorbitant fees, and setting different cut-off marks for different tiers of tertiary education.

Ezeibe said that JAMB has lost its relevance and mandate as a clearing house for admission into tertiary institutions, since universities and polytechnics now conduct their own post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) examinations. He also lamented the low patronage of polytechnics by applicants, saying that only one per cent of candidates in the UTME apply for polytechnics.

He argued that some of the government’s policies and pronouncements had helped to de-market the polytechnic system in the country, which is supposed to promote technical and vocational education. He called for a review of the National Policy on Education and the establishment of a National Commission for Polytechnics to address the challenges facing the sector.

He urged JAMB to stop extorting money from applicants and causing unnecessary hardship for them, and to respect their choices and preferences. He also appealed to the government and the public to support the polytechnic system and appreciate its contributions to national development.
