2024 UTME: JAMB Announces Free Registration for Persons with Disabilities

2024 UTME: JAMB Announces Free Registration for Persons with Disabilities

In a significant move towards inclusivity, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has declared that Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD) who intend to participate in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be registered at no cost. The announcement was made by the Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during a media interactive session inaugurating the registration process for the 2024 UTME.

As part of its commitment to support all categories of PLWD, JAMB will issue free application documents to facilitate their participation in the examination. This measure aims to remove financial barriers and create equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Highlighting additional measures to provide a level playing field, Prof. Oloyede disclosed that audio books would now be provided for blind candidates. The decision to offer audio books was a result of suggestions made during the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.

The audio books, available in popular formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA, are designed to be compatible with various devices capable of streaming audio records. This innovative approach aims to enhance accessibility and comprehension for blind candidates, providing a digital adaptation of traditional reading materials.

“The provision of audio books is a significant step towards creating an environment where blind candidates can easily understand the subject or text,” remarked Prof. Oloyede.

In addition to audio books, JAMB has taken steps to eliminate potential challenges for blind candidates by removing diagrams from their examination questions. This move ensures that blind candidates can engage with the examination content effectively.

For the 2024 UTME, JAMB has also introduced an e-copy of the reading text, which will be provided free of charge to all categories of candidates. This initiative aligns with the examination body’s commitment to leveraging technology for the benefit of candidates.

Registration for the 2024 UTME is set to commence on January 15th, with a fee of N6,200 for candidates not participating in the mock examination and N7,700 for those opting for the mock test. JAMB’s dedication to ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates, including those with disabilities, underscores its commitment to fairness and accessibility in the educational assessment process.
